To create an original footwear design for the brand Asics. This design would become my submission for the Asics X Pensole masterclass 2019.
My inspiration for the sneaker was to look at traditional Japanese art forms and architecture to help create the shape and form of the sneaker. My key inspiration was origami, specifically the work of Giang Dinh a modern Japanese artist who uses origami to create shapes and installations showing the movement of the paper to create different shapes.
After initial sketches and designs, I used my sketches to create 2D test rigs, so I could see how the paper could fold and the different ways it could be moved and changed to reveal more about the sneaker. I then moved onto a 3D test rig of a sneaker last to be able to see the scale of the shapes and how they would appear on a physical sneaker.
